Southwest Airlines Names Prairieside “Most Ideal” Place to Stay in Grand Rapids

When Southwest Airlines announced in early 2013 that they were bringing service to Gerald R. Ford International Airport, people who fly in and out of Grand Rapids got very excited. After all, Southwest airlines meant more competition, so flight prices would drop. Plus their no baggage fee policies and free flight transfers have always been appealing to air travelers.

The addition of Southwest service to Grand Rapids meant there would be double the flights that had been previously carried by AirTran and those flights would include daily trips to Baltimore-Washington, Denver, Orlando and St. Louis international airports. It also meant that outside travelers would have more access to the great city of Grand Rapids and all wonderful attractions our city has to offer.

Not only were flyers in and out of Grand Rapids excited by this move, but Southwest Airlines was excited about moving to the Grand Rapids market too. The August 2013 edition of Spirit Magazine, Southwest Airlines inflight magazine, did a feature article on Grand Rapids. In this article, Southwest Airlines listed things to do and places to stay during travel to West Michigan. Wanting their customers to have the best of the best when they travel, Spirit Magazine named Prairieside Suites as one of the top three “most ideal” places to stay in Grand Rapids. Of our bed and breakfast the article went on to say, “Each of the seven guest rooms at this B&B is equipped with a hot tub for two. For even more pampering, stop by the massage room for a couple's treatment.”

Whether you're planning your stay in the Grand Rapids area after catching a Southwest Airlines flight to town, or even if you are local and looking for a top place to stay after a short drive, Prairieside Suites Luxury Bed & Breakfast is that place. Southwest Airlines will take you to the heart of West Michigan, but your stay at Prairieside Suites will make you feel like a world traveler if you chose to stay at one of our European inspired designed rooms. You can choose from our Tuscan Villa, our Spanish Hacienda, or our English Cottage, or our French Riviera rooms. To make your stay the most ideal it can be, plan an individual or a couple's massage. After planning your travel to Grand Rapids, be sure to plan your stay at Prairieside Suites.

In Love and In Business After 30+ Years!

What do a fully renovated 1920s Dutch colonial home, a certified kitchen and bath designer, and a licensed builder have in common? Put them together and they add up to the luxurious Prairieside Suites, an award winning west Michigan bed and breakfast, where owners Cheri and Paul Antozak help guests experience a life of luxury by creating a unique B&B experience.

Cheri, the designer, and Paul, the builder, worked together to make Cheri's dream of owning a "Romantic Bed & Breakfast" a reality opening their doors in April 2002; seven years after the Antozak's purchased this home. The entire home, was renovated to create luxury “spa rooms” out of six individual apartments. The traditional design and luxurious décor exude an atmosphere of warmth and indulgence, inviting guests to relax and forget the stresses of the outside world. As soon as you step through the front door, you are welcomed by smiling faces and hometown hospitality. Cheri says, “guests arrive as strangers and leave feeling like family”.

Luxury guest rooms are at the heart of this nurturing environment. Together, they meticulously created each room as a “one-of-a-kind” LUXURY suite. Each have a theme and decorative style from one our favorite parts of the world, and we love sharing these magnificent rooms with our guests!

Cheri's attention to detail shows in this multi award-winning B&B. These whirlpool & fireplace suites have been published in brochures and national design magazines. She invites you to “step out of your own life briefly and experience something different." Guests tell us that they leave feeling refreshed & rejuvenated. They’re energized and ready to go home and live their best life.

During the summer months, take a dip in the heated pool with waterfall; enjoy the colorful perennial gardens with fountain from the double glider swing in the pergola, or bird watch from a hammock under the shady canopy of the inn's three-hundred-year-old oak tree. In the winter, make popcorn and unwind in the comfort of your room while enjoying a movie from the inn's movie library, featuring over three hundred titles.

"We feel privileged to be able to provide the perfect setting for our guests to celebrate any special occasion," says Cheri. We understand our guest have many choices of places they can STAY, when they’re here with us our goal is to deliver an EXPERIENCE and really build a lasting memory while visiting the Grand Rapids area!

Prairieside Suites wins 2011 Governor’s Award

2011 Governor’s Award for Innovative Tourism Collaboration is given to Prairieside Suites Luxury Bed & Breakfast for its collaboration on the new “Michigan Lake to Lake B&B Association’s" cutting edge website and for its successful use of blogging, facebook, e-marketing efforts and also for the huge amount of publicity and goodwill that was generated for its participation in the B&B’s for Veterans National Event all of which Prairieside Suites, a Michigan bed and breakfast, participated in.  Governor Rick Snyder presented the award himself at the Spring Governor’s luncheon in Kalamazoo.

Prairieside Suites, owner, Cheri Antozak said “It's a real honor to have received this award given by the Michigan Travel Commission and we’re very proud to have been a part of this collaborative effort”.  We are one of nine B&B’s that received this award from the Tourism Marketing and Promotion Category.

Michigan Lake to Lake B&B Association has more than 130 bed and breakfasts members. With everyone “fighting to be at the top of Google,” we have a greater opportunity collectively to accomplish this than going it alone. The ML2L Association is like a portal, which provides access to resources and promotes it's members.  ML2L has another strength, each member of it's board of directors owns and operates a B&B.  It's these creative minds that help drive the organization.  “There are terrific people in leadership positions on our board of directors,” said, Linda Singer, ML2L's executive director. “An association is all about the people who lead you and we have visionaries.”  To read more about the new ML2L website see related article in

Cheri [a designer] & her husband Paul [a builder] purchased their home in 1995.  They worked for seven years transforming their large 1920’s Dutch Colonial home [which was divided into four apartments] into the beautiful modern luxury B&B that it is today.  They accepted their first guests in May 2002.  Cheri says, we know our guests can say anywhere.  They stay with us because we create an experience.  We're different, "B and B's are definitely a better way to stay".

Ooey Gooey Brownies

We're excited to share that our hot cocoa recipe was featured in Lainer's Travel Newsletter AND on the Diamond Collection's Blog [you can click on either link to view and print the recipe]!  We know that our guests love this hot cocoa and return guests look forward to it! This also prompted us to share another recipe with you- one that is equally delightful!  Ladies remember that the way to you man's heart if through his stomach…start baking these brownies so you can butter him up.  Then talk him into bringing you to Prairieside Suites Luxury Bed and Breakfast for a romantic get away.

Ooey Gooey Brownies (Made in a Muffin Tin)

20 oz package fudge brownie mix

cooking spray

12 Nilla wafer cookies

12 caramels

1. Preheat oven to 350'.  Prepare brownies according to box instructions.  Coat muffin tin with cooking spray or use cupcake liners and place one cookie each in bottom of tin.

2. Spoon 3 tablespoons of batter over each wafer.  Unwrap caramels and place one in the center of each brownie, topping with small spoonful of batter.  Bake brownies 22 minutes.  Cool for about 10 minutes, remove from tin, and serve warm.

Note: It’s normal for them to rise as they bake and fall as they cool, leaving a perfect pocket for icing, ice cream or whip cream.  Serve warm so the caramel is gooey!  If you serve the cooled then microwave for 10 seconds and the caramel becomes soft again.

A Charming Couple: Karl and Marie

Karl and Marie have been adopted by the Prairieside staff as relatives to all of us BECAUSE they come and visit us for their birthdays and anniversary whenever possible.  They are very special for so many reasons! Number one…what can you say about a couple who's anniversary is on the 4th of July?  How about—they have "sparkling" personalities that are remarkable and memorable!  Every occasion with them is a treat, and often includes a birthday cake!  Here is Marie with Karl, celebrating her 82nd birthday with a special cake that had a picture that was taken at her grand daughters wedding.

We celebrated Karl's last birthday with a big chocolate cake and we even had a rose for Marie [we couldn't leave her out of the fun]!  While they were here, Marie talked about how she missed being able to wear pierced earrings so I found a place nearby that could re-pierce her ears for her. She is delighted to be wearing pierced earrings again and grateful that I made it easy for her to have this done.

Paul and I feel truly blessed to be able to provide the perfect setting for our guests to celebrate any special occasion.  Marie says "We always enjoy coming to Prairieside Suites B&B, it's OUR home away from home."  The funny coincidence is that Marie & Karl live in Ionia Michigan on Washington Street and we live on Washington Ave.  No wonder they feel like they're at home? I always look forward to having them come and when they're  here we go to lunch with my daughter and grandchildren!  Our little guys know that Mr. Karl always has tootsie rolls in his pocket to share with ALL of us!  Marie & Karl enjoy each other and traveling as you can see in their picture below.

Do you need a break from every day life? A time to relax and rejuvenate? Let us help you plan YOUR perfect get away. We understand that you have many choices of places where you can STAY, but when you're here with us our goal is to deliver an EXPERIENCE and create a lasting memory!  Many of our guests are here so they can unplug, turn off their cells phones, rest, watch movies, enjoy their jacuzzi tubs and just stay in their room to relax and reconnect with each other.  We'll even bring breakfast to your room if you like! Or, we're happy to give suggestions and help you explore Grandville and see what the nearby towns have to offer. Grand Rapids is just a few minutes up the road and Holland, MI a beautiful lakeshore community, is about 2o minutes away.

Kitchen Clean Up!

The big Thanksgiving feast is done and we are now quickly approaching Christmas. I am certain you are plenty busy but what a great time to get down to the nitty gritty in your kitchen. Clean it, organize it, make it sparkle for your house guests! We recently did this here at Prairieside Suites and it looks wonderful, so fresh and almost new even!

Where to start? Figuring this out is often the most daunting part of the task. We find it works best if you clean from the top to the bottom. So, for those of you who have cabinets that don't go to the ceiling, start on top of the cabinets. This is a place that is not seen and therefore is often forgotten about but it will, no doubt, need to be rid of the dust and cobwebs!  A good vacuuming with the wand of your vac is just what it needs! If you have greenery on top of your cabinets, swish it in warm sudsy water and let it drip dry while you continue to work your way down through the cabinets, cleaning and organizing as you go. When you get to the drawers, take out the vacuum again and suck up the crumbs laying in the corners and crevices!  At the same time vacuum the drawer at the bottom of your stove if you have one.

Then, keep going onto the lower cabinets. Don't forget to wipe down the fronts and vacuum out the bottoms- you'll be amazed at the crumbs that collect there (and even pet hair if you own a pet). Under the kitchen sink, soap and cleaning supplies inevitably get spilled so empty the cupboard and give it a good wipe down then neatly put everything back. Two other places that collect crumbs are the toaster and toaster oven. Make sure to dump the crumb tray in the toaster and use the crevice tool on your vacuum to clean out the bottom of your toaster oven.

Then, make sure you go around the kitchen cleaning the cabinet toe-kick area and adjoining baseboards- vacuuming first and then wipe them down. One place that is often missed is the grill on the front of the fridge- prepare yourself for the mess you'll find- then gently pull it off and put it in a sink or tub of warm, soapy water and give it a good washing.  Use a yard stick to roll all dust towards the front so you can suck it into the vacuum, your refrigerator will love this, it'll work more efficiently and last longer plus no more dust bunnies! It's time to give the refrigerator a good cleaning inside and out. A magic eraser works great on the handles and for cleaning dirty marks off the paddles on the ice and water dispensers.

What are you waiting for? Get busy! It's a giant task indeed but if you follow these simple steps, you'll have a sparkling kitchen in to time! And when you are done and need a break, you can come visit Prairieside Suites to relax and rejuvenate (that is, of course, as long as you can stand to part with your new, sparkling kitchen!)  We have a special for you…stay two nights and get a Free 1/2 hour massage, Free box of gift wrapped chocolates and a Free Firelight Romance Candle Package!

While you are here, you can knock out the rest of your Christmas shopping at Rivertown Crossings Mall, just down the road. There are plenty of restaurants nearby also, as well as a movie theater. I saw the movie…"Red" with Bruce Willis and loved it!  Grand Rapids also has plenty of seasonal venues, including the favorite play Peter Pan. Our hockey team, the Grand Rapids Griffins, are busy cutting up the ice and they're fun to watch.

Veterans Stay Free at B&B’s Across the U.S.

Prairieside was honored to be a part of the Inns for Vets program this year! It was a delight to read the stories sent in and we had participation from two local businesses.  Season's Floral adorned each guest suite with a beautiful red, white, and blue bouquet [pictured] and Gordon Food Service donated all the food for our welcome reception. Our Veterans who have previously stayed at B&B's remarked on how they enjoyed our luxurious intimate guest suites at Prairieside Suites and said they have never stayed at a B&B with so many in room amenities and thoughtful little touches for them to enjoy. I have always said that owning a bed and breakfast is a love business so I had to smile when Carol, wife of Vietnam vet Floyd said she could "feel the love" at Prairieside Suites.  Another Carol (three of our ten guests were named Carol!), wife of retired Army veteran Doug, who was awarded two purple hearts, a bronze star, and a silver star, said she would most definitely recommend Prairieside Suites to her friends and said that Prairieside Suites was the nicest Bed and Breakfast they'd ever stayed in. After our guests arrived and were settled into their rooms on Wednesday night, we began their visit with a welcome reception. Savory meatballs, spinach dip and pita chips, meat and cheese platter with crackers, cookies, gourmet chocolates, cheesecake sampler, and brownies, along with conversation and story telling were enjoyed by all. It was a pleasant, relaxing evening! Thursday morning, guests were greeted in the common area with smiles and the smell of French toast being prepared. After everyone gathered, we moved to the dining room where the table was beautifully set, fruit and warm baked goods were waiting. Conversations flowed and we heard laughter many times throughout the meal! One of our veterans also wrote a touching poem which he shared with us as we wrapped up the meal. After breakfast, the guests started to pack up and, one by one, began to depart. Hugs and thank- yous were given. Jimmy, a disabled veteran who uses a walker to get around, exclaimed as he was leaving: "I feel so good, like I've been cured." Every vet and every friend or spouse who joined us was grateful and stated that the appreciation shown to them on Veterans Day made an extra special memory, an experience… not just a stay!  The veterans are the ones who truly sacrificed, dedicating their lives to protecting us and preserving our freedom. For that, we are grateful beyond words. Honoring these men and women was the very least we could do to say thank you to all of those who have served and are currently serving in our armed forces. Come, experience my world! Cheri
