The Prairieside Way to Enjoy ArtPrize

Four years ago the concept of ArtPrize was introduced to Grand Rapids by it's creator Rick DeVos as what he described as a “social experiment”. His plan was to give away the largest prize in art world history based solely on public vote. That first year 1262 artists from 41 states and 14 different countries negotiated with area businesses, churches, and organizations in the downtown area to put their works on display in more than a hundred different venues. Every fall since then, ArtPrize has taken over the streets and buildings of Grand Rapids in what is described as one of the most amazing art events in the world. This year's ArtPrize, which runs from September 18th until October 6th, promises only to be bigger and better.

Art comes in many different forms and ArtPrize 2013 takes almost all of those forms and puts them on display in a three square mile area for the public to view free of charge. While enjoying the experience you'll get the chance to see everything from paintings, to sculptures, to music, to performance art. You may want to stop by The B.O.B to see "Le Cercle Du Temps", a rotating interactive piece that offers participants the chance to see their head reflected on another viewer's body. Take a short walk over to The Amway Grand Plaza to view “Myth or Logic” a three dimensional mythical creature created by thousands of pieces of bamboo suspended in air on thread. As you make your way up the Grand River you'll encounter dozens of other works of art before stopping in at DeVos Place where artist Marco Riolo will create a monster that your imagination brings to life.

Whether you like traditional art or abstract art, paintings or sculptures, art that conforms or art that pushes the limits, with ArtPrize you are guaranteed to find something you love and almost as certain you'll find pieces that make you question “THIS is art!?” This year's competition gives you the chance to experience over 1500 different works of art in at 169 different venues. But one of the best things about ArtPrize is that you get to help decide who will take home the $200,000 top prize with your votes.

While you take some time to relax after experiencing ArtPrize and cast your votes for who you'd like to have win, you can be guaranteed top prize in accommodations by staying at Prairieside Suites. Each of our suites is so beautifully designed and artfully decorated, that when you climb into bed after a long day at ArtPrize, you'll feel as if you're virtually enjoying a masterfully created room that's work of art. No matter what your taste in art, Prairieside Suites is assured to have a room that fits your artistic style from modern and edgy to old world classics. In order to make your ArtPrize experience into a romantic get away, make your reservation online at Prairieside Suites Luxury Bed & Breakfast today. Top 5 myths about staying at a bed and breakfast

Travelers were asked by the California Association of Bed & Breakfast Inns if they had ever stayed at a bed and breakfast, some of their answers led to the discovery of interesting myths surrounding B&Bs.

1. B&B decor is limited to lace doilies, paisley or floral wallpaper, antiques, & patchwork quilts. While many B&B are like visiting a bygone era…At Prairieside Suites Luxury Bed and Breakfast [Grandville, MI] our rooms have been professionally decorated in a timeless manor.  Each room is decorated after a different part of the world says Cheri Antozak owner, innkeeper and designer of Prairieside Suites.  Our spacious themed rooms create an experience in themselves.  We have a Tuscan Villa, a Southern Mansion, a Spanish Hacienda, a French Riviera and an English Cottage suite.  See these romantic get away Havens @   Each one of these beautiful allergy free spa rooms has a clean sophisticated decor with modern furnishings, flat screen TV’s with more than 100 channels of cable TV and luxury amenities.

2. You have to share a bathroom with other guests?  The majority of inns offer private bathrooms and at Prairieside Suites each guest room has it’s own private luxury bathroom with Jacuzzi tub, showers, heated towel bars & heated toilet seats.

3. You have to eat breakfast with total strangers?  Many inns offers guests a variety of choices for breakfast and pride themselves on accommodating guests with special diets or food allergies and we do too.  At Prairieside Suites, we offer breakfast three different ways so our guests choose the experience they want.

a.   We serve a full hot candle light breakfast in our dining room every morning @ 9:30

b.  Or we'll deliver a full hot breakfast to the privacy of your room @ 10am [for a $15.00 room service fee]

c.  OR we'll pack your "IN" room refrigerator with a deluxe continental breakfast so you can snuggle, sleep

in and eat on YOUR schedule with full privacy.

4. You have to abide by a curfew set by the innkeeper? Curfews are one of the most common myths. At Prairieside Suites upon arrival our guests are given a warm house welcome and we use keyless entry codes so they may easily come and go as they please during their entire stay with us.

5. B&Bs are only for couples and strictly prohibit children and pets? Many inns offer a family units with multiple bedrooms and or a pet-friendly room as well. At Prairieside Suites our Southern Mansion is a flexable room that can be turned into a family suite that is also pet friendly.  So we have three packages to address these needs.

Baby Package- Includes A Pack 'n Play, Travel Swing, Changing Pad and a Baby Monitor.   If you reserve the “Southern Mansion” the baby can sleep with you OR in the room next to yours which gives you the opportunity to whirlpool and watch TV without disturbing your baby. For everyone’s comfort these rooms are located side by side on the South end of the house without any other guest rooms nearby so our other guests still have their privacy too!  $49.00 one time charge

Family Suite- Right next to our “Southern Mansion” is another separate bedroom with a twin daybed & twin trundle bed This allows you to have two separate bedrooms for sleeping.  The kids will be sharing your bathroom, but have their own TV.  For everyone’s comfort these rooms are located side by side on the South end of the house without any other guest rooms nearby…so our other guests still have their privacy too!  This is a per night charge, so you need to enter the quantity of nights you'll be here.

Traveling with a Pet? We can accept animals who sleep on the floor in our "Southern Mansion Suite" only [because it is the only room that has a vinyl floor that we can keep allergy free].  So for a charge of $25.00 a night per pet you can have your four legged kid’s stay with us too.

Chihuly art glass sculptures at Frederick Meijer Gardens

There are two permanent Chihuly works of art that on display at Frederick Meijer Gardens.  Dale Chihuly, the most sought-after artist in the world working primarily in glass created a dazzling ceiling sculpture in the Taste of the Gardens Café inside Frederick Meijer Gardens.  This sculpture is apply named Lena’s Garden in honor of Lena Meijer, the sculpture, comprised of dozens of individual blown-glass pieces, spans the ceiling in a spectrum of colors from cool greens, cobalt blues and purples to brilliant oranges, yellows and reds that happily run along the cafeteria ceiling to delight all who enter. When you walk out of the cafe look up and to your right.  A beautiful chihuly chandelier hangs from the ceiling where natural daylight dances through the glass.  As I stood gazing at both of these magnificent pieces I imagined how hard and nerve wracking it would be to install one of these fragile works of art.  Our guests who stay with us at Prairieside Suites often talk over breakfast about how much they enjoyed their afternoon over at Frederik Meijer Gardens. So on your next visit to Grand Rapids, MI discover the beauty and splendor of the botanic garden and internationally acclaimed sculpture park.  Then when you feet are sore return back to our bed and breakfast for a relaxing soak in one of our over sized jacuzzi tubs for two!

Even if art and sculptures are not your thing, Grand Rapids still has plenty to offer- including lots of sporting events, night clubs, and excellent restaurants.  While you are staying with us at Prairieside Suites, take a gander at the ongoing list of events that we print weekly located in our guest gift and  communication area.
