Experience Grand Rapids’ ArtPrize at Prairieside

Grand Rapids, Michigan is a city whose slogan sums it all up, "Cool City. Hot Food." Now nothing says "cool," quite like the large event known as ArtPrize. For those who are unaware of the event, here's a brief rundown. Artists can submit their project (art) to the event and their project is featured somewhere within the city. So over the course of a few weeks that the event occurs, city dwellers and tourists travel the town, in-and-out of bars, clubs, hotels, and each little cafe. All just to see the exhibits. The coolest part (for the artist)  is that the people vote online or by texting and the winner receives a hefty cash prize of $200,000.

Now ArtPrize can already be an overwhelming event due to it's popularity, especially for those of you coming from out of town. Of course the city makes accommodations like changing bus routes, providing maps, and a plethora of online information. There is still one thing everyone from out of town needs though, and that's a "cool" place to stay. This is where PrairieSide Suites comes in. More specifically, this is where Cheri and Paul Antozak come into play. There's a reason PrairieSide Suites has received so many accolades, it all comes down to the owners and their amazing hospitality to all guests that step within their doors. Now what exactly makes this place "cool" though? Well that would be the suites. Every room is designed with a specific theme in mind. Just take a look at the New York Loft, or perhaps a Santa Barbara Beach House better suits your style. No matter what type of person you are, PrairieSide Suites is sure to be a great fit for you and your trip to ArtPrize.

Grand Haven Light House

A Perfect Spring through Fall Get Away…Imagine waking up in a king size bed at, the award winning, Prairieside Suites. A Luxury Michigan Bed and Breakfast.  You roll over, cuddle and talk about how much you both enjoyed the romantic oversized jacuzzi bath before bed last night.  You feel amazingly relaxed while you enjoy a wonderful candle light breakfast fit for royalty.

Now off for a day of lake shore fun in Grand Haven.  Enjoy the magnificent beauty alongside Lake Michigan’s sandy beaches after a lovely 40 minute drive.  Arrive at Grand Haven State Park and take a leisurely walk, on the pier, out to the story and a half “Pierhead light house” which was built in 1875 and moved after a pier extension in 1905.

The building has a concrete V-shaped front to withstand the fury of Lake Michigan storms which makes the light house look like a ship’s bow.  In 1905 a second 51-foot tower was constructed and is referred to as the “inner light”.  Both fire-engine red beacons, located at the end of South Harbor Drive, mark the entrance to the Grand River at Grand Haven, MI.  It is common to see fishermen as your stroll down the concrete pier. These buildings [which are active navigation aids] have an elevated catwalk that connects the two lights.  When the lights were manned by keepers, in bad weather, the catwalk was used to get from the shore.  The lights, which are maintained by the Grand Haven Coast Guard, are not open to the public and the catwalk for public safety now stops short of running all the way to the beach.

Next you can relax and unwind while you experience some adventure while sailing the beautiful waters of Lake Michigan on a 63-foot double gaff-rigged schooner, the Wind Dancer, which departs daily from the Chinook pier.  Let the crew tend to your needs while you and your sweetheart unwind with a glass of wine as you feel the warm summer breezes blowing through your hair.  [Make sure to wear light colored soft soled shoes as any Black soled shoes, even athletic shoes can damage the classic decks].

After your romantic sailing excursion your senses will be refreshed and you’ll be ready to seek both land and food.  The Kirby House, which was formerly a historic hotel, is a community favorite [located at 2 Washington Ave., Grand Haven, MI 49417].  Featuring both excellent food and live entertainment it’s sure to please.

Consumer Trends “Room Lifts” over “Major Home Remodels”

I have been a designer & remodeling contractor since 1986.  I love creating intelligent designs that function beautifully.  I am the designer and Innkeeper at “Prairieside Suites” a romantic bed and breakfast near Grand Rapids, MI featuring luxury whirlpool and fireplace suites.

I have lived through quite a few recessions, seen my share of market shifts and experienced dramatic changes in consumer spending.  I like this phase which I’ll call “conscious consumerism” or a return to good old fashioned values.

  1. People are saving money instead of spending it.
  2. When they do spend money, they’re using cash instead of credit.
  3. People are paying down their credit cards and trying to reduce their debt.
  4. They are making an effort to live within their means.  Wow, wouldn’t Grandpa be proud of us, we’re finally getting it!

This change has had a dramatic impact on home remodeling.  Many homeowners are choosing to do “Room Lifts” which are small personalized room upgrades to their homes instead of the major remodels that were routinely done before the recession.   I see a more conscious effort to re-use, re-cycle and re-claim.  Green is in and it starts with re-purposing.  Home remodeling today is more focused on improving our quality of life while we stay in our homes….essentially creating “live-in value”.  We are creating rooms that we can enjoy, guilt free, because we own the investment.  Gosh, that makes perfect sense to me.

Distinctive B&B ambiance appeals to growing number of travelers
Wednesday, July 06, 2011

The terms “bed & breakfast” (B&B) and “inn” conjure up romantic images of stately Victorian houses nestled among majestic oaks, graciously operated by entrepreneurs we secretly admire because they finally decided to follow their dream. Yet how do these seductive images translate into market appeal? Results of the just-released Ypartnership/Harrison Group 2011 Portrait of American Travelers reveal the answer.

Fully one out of every eight (13 percent) American leisure travelers stayed at a B&B or inn at least once during the previous year, the survey reveals. This incidence rises to one out of six (17 percent) among leisure travelers with an annual household income of $125,000 or more. And a remarkable eight out of ten (79 percent) leisure travelers express interest in staying at a B&B during the year ahead. Why is this notion so appealing? Not surprisingly, it’s the lure of their distinctive ambiance.

When asked why they patronize B&Bs and inns, leisure travelers who did so during the previous year cited reasons that point to the unique, authentic experiences they enjoy during their stay. Nearly two-thirds (64 percent) of patrons prefer the private, less crowded, quiet atmosphere of small inns and B&Bs. More than half feel B&Bs offer a better sense of local culture (56 percent). Personalized service delivered by the innkeeper (54 percent), unique architecture and decor (53 percent) and home-cooked food (52 percent) are also cited as appealing aspects of B&B travel. When compared to a traditional hotel/motel, more than two in five travelers find B&Bs more romantic (47 percent) and feel more pampered (45 percent), while slightly less enjoy socializing with other guests (39 percent) and feel B&Bs are a more affordable escape (37 percent). One in five (19 percent) appreciates a general pet-friendly policy maintained by most B&Bs and small inns.

Among leisure travelers who express interest in staying at a B&B or inn on a future trip, the home-like ambiance and amenities they expect to find in these properties are the primary motivators. The majority of survey respondents cited comfortable beds/linens (92 percent), friendly staff (91 percent), complimentary, fresh-made breakfast (88 percent), free time to relax and unwind (87 percent) and knowledgeable innkeepers (80 percent) as desirable attributes of B&Bs. Other aspects include the opportunity to taste different or unusual cuisines (68 percent), free Wi-Fi availability (67 percent), romantic ambiance (63 percent), distinctive theme or atmosphere (59 percent), unique architecture (55 percent) and the ability to reserve a specific room with unique decor (53 percent). Two in five travelers are eager to socialize with other interesting guests (41 percent).

Clearly, consumers believe B&Bs and inns offer an alluring residential ambiance that is not found in most conventional hotels and resorts. When combined with the personal touches of the host innkeeper, this appeal is very alluring.

Innkeepers Tell Their Story

Hi this is Cheri Antozak, designer, owner & innkeeper at Prairieside Suites, an award winning, Luxury Bed and Breakfast near Grand Rapids, MI.  I am often asked by guests about how I became an Innkeeper, so I am going to share my story.

When I was 18 years old I graduated from high school, married my sweetheart, we bought our first home [which was 80 years old] and for some reason I had the dream of owning a bed and breakfast.  Let me mention right now that I had never stayed at a bed and breakfast so I have no idea where that came from.  I will say, though, that even as a child [my grandmothers used to say that I had an old soul] because I have loved and appreciated beautiful things new and old.

Now lets fast forward…seventeen years and three daughters later [it goes by faster than you think].  My husband, Paul,  and I co-own a successful remodeling company [Interiors by Cheri, Inc.].  I have earned several credentials "Certified Kitchen Designer", "Certified Bathroom Designer", "Licensed Builder" and became registered with the state of Michigan as an "Interior Designer".  Paul is, also, a "licensed builder", he's a certified "Corian" solid surface counter fabricator and a certified "window installer".  Believe it or not, I still have the dream of owning a "Pure Michigan" bed and breakfast and create a "better way to stay" for travelers!  Paul & I have traveled extensively as volunteer leaders for the "National Kitchen & Bath Association" where I have held several positions and we have stayed in many of the best hotels across the US and Canada.  At each place that we stay I find that I'm still day-dreaming of having a bed and breakfast and we still haven't ever stayed at a B&B so, I have to tell you, Paul thinks his wife is a little coo-coo.

I must admit to having a gregarious personality.  I love cooking, entertaining, gardening, telling stories, a good belly laugh, and I love people.  So now if I could only make a business out of all this.   Hmmmm,  voila, what about a bed and breakfast business?  Think about it, I am a designer so I can easily create beautiful rooms for guests to enjoy, what fun!    Oh my, but Paul would have lots of work if we were to start all over again.  He had finished remodeling our home and had finished building our showroom and this would be another huge project…ahh, maybe I won't bring that up to HIM just yet!  Especially since he has spent 14 of the last 17 years working on our home [the same one we bought when I was 18 yrs old] and 10 years building and continuously updating our "Interiors by Cheri" showroom in a commercial strip mall which showcased the products we offered along with his craftsmanship. Plus each time I talked about a bed and breakfast he had valid concerns about… 1.  How would people know we were here?  [There hadn't been a B&B in Grandville before].  2.  How would we get the word out?  3.  Why would they come here to stay with us?  We're talking about a different time in marketing because this was 1993 when the internet was fairly new and bnb's were basically marketed by being published in travel guide books.  Paul just didn't think anyone would come [or even know we were here]…but he somehow had faith in me and the idea of having a B&B anyway [what a guy].

In 1993 "HE" made the decision that "WE" were signing our last lease in the mall and "I" had two years to figure out where we would relocate to.  His thought was we were build a commercial building that would house our "home remodeling showroom" because this is what we had been doing but this time we would own the building instead of renting.  I had another idea :-o ) so in 1995 we found & purchased our home which was a large dutch colonial built in 1920 that had been divided into a four-plex apartment building.  We continue to run the remodeling business, raise the girls and live off site in our family homestead [a few blocks away].  The B&B renovation took place on nights and weekends in between the normal stuff like band concerts, birthday parties and shuttling kids here and there, you know, normal life.  Well, it was actually a little more complicated than that because when we bought the big house we purchased the house on either side of it and they were both duplexes.  So we were new landlords and had three houses that needed roofs, windows and all types of remodeling.  We were crazy people, who worked diligently for 7 years before welcoming our first guest in 2002.  That was the same year our daughter Melissa was married and we had 17 family members from three different states come stay with us for her wedding [while we were setting up the church and helping to prepare food for 200 people].  Our family were our FIRST B&B guests and gave us valued feedback on our rooms.

My dream had been that each of our guest rooms would have a romantic whirlpool tub with fireplace and a king size bed. My goal was for our rooms to be a unique experience by designing them each after a different part of the world.  My hope was that guests would want to come back to experience each wonderful environment and to enjoy the overall atmosphere of practical luxury.

We started with three guest suites… A "Southern Mansion", a "Tuscan Villa" and an "English Cottage".  After five years, plus lots of guests, we were ready and in need of adding more rooms.  This would be tricky because our remodeling would have to happen when we didn't have guests in the house [we certainly couldn't disturb anyone with construction noise].  It wasn't easy and this process took two years.  In 2009 we introduced two more rooms themed as the "French Riviera" and "Spanish Hacienda".  We, also, introduced a new massage room where we could offer side by side couples massages. These new rooms were a big hit and guest started asking right away WHEN we would add more rooms and WHERE they would they be.

There is a new excitement in the air as we are now in the process of renovating the upstairs of the duplex next door [to the East of us] and adding two more rooms. They will be themed as the "Santa Barbara Beach House" and the "New York Loft".  We're in the middle of sawdust, drywall dust, tile dust and whatever other dust you can think of!  We're tired but can't wait to introduce these new rooms and our guests can't wait to SEE and STAY in them  There encouragement is wonderful and drives us through this dusty time.  We are thankful that we're working on the house next door and we don't have to worry about construction noise this time!  I carry these new rooms in my thoughts [lots of planning] and like a pregnant woman ready to deliver…I can't wait to see them completed.

As time passes the family continues to grow, we have 4 grandsons who spend every Monday here [while mommy works].  Everyone comes to dinner that day, including our daughters, son in law and my mom.  I continue to dream of what will come next [don't tell Paul].  When I lay in bed at night, I ponder my day and think of what the future may bring [I apparently have my foot going a mile a minute] and Paul will put his hand on me and say "Turn off your brain honey, I know your making work for me"!  :-o    I sleep if only to dream and guess the rest is just history [or HER-story] in the making!
