Southwest Airlines Names Prairieside “Most Ideal” Place to Stay in Grand Rapids

When Southwest Airlines announced in early 2013 that they were bringing service to Gerald R. Ford International Airport, people who fly in and out of Grand Rapids got very excited. After all, Southwest airlines meant more competition, so flight prices would drop. Plus their no baggage fee policies and free flight transfers have always been appealing to air travelers.

The addition of Southwest service to Grand Rapids meant there would be double the flights that had been previously carried by AirTran and those flights would include daily trips to Baltimore-Washington, Denver, Orlando and St. Louis international airports. It also meant that outside travelers would have more access to the great city of Grand Rapids and all wonderful attractions our city has to offer.

Not only were flyers in and out of Grand Rapids excited by this move, but Southwest Airlines was excited about moving to the Grand Rapids market too. The August 2013 edition of Spirit Magazine, Southwest Airlines inflight magazine, did a feature article on Grand Rapids. In this article, Southwest Airlines listed things to do and places to stay during travel to West Michigan. Wanting their customers to have the best of the best when they travel, Spirit Magazine named Prairieside Suites as one of the top three “most ideal” places to stay in Grand Rapids. Of our bed and breakfast the article went on to say, “Each of the seven guest rooms at this B&B is equipped with a hot tub for two. For even more pampering, stop by the massage room for a couple's treatment.”

Whether you're planning your stay in the Grand Rapids area after catching a Southwest Airlines flight to town, or even if you are local and looking for a top place to stay after a short drive, Prairieside Suites Luxury Bed & Breakfast is that place. Southwest Airlines will take you to the heart of West Michigan, but your stay at Prairieside Suites will make you feel like a world traveler if you chose to stay at one of our European inspired designed rooms. You can choose from our Tuscan Villa, our Spanish Hacienda, or our English Cottage, or our French Riviera rooms. To make your stay the most ideal it can be, plan an individual or a couple's massage. After planning your travel to Grand Rapids, be sure to plan your stay at Prairieside Suites.

The Prairieside Way to Enjoy ArtPrize

Four years ago the concept of ArtPrize was introduced to Grand Rapids by it's creator Rick DeVos as what he described as a “social experiment”. His plan was to give away the largest prize in art world history based solely on public vote. That first year 1262 artists from 41 states and 14 different countries negotiated with area businesses, churches, and organizations in the downtown area to put their works on display in more than a hundred different venues. Every fall since then, ArtPrize has taken over the streets and buildings of Grand Rapids in what is described as one of the most amazing art events in the world. This year's ArtPrize, which runs from September 18th until October 6th, promises only to be bigger and better.

Art comes in many different forms and ArtPrize 2013 takes almost all of those forms and puts them on display in a three square mile area for the public to view free of charge. While enjoying the experience you'll get the chance to see everything from paintings, to sculptures, to music, to performance art. You may want to stop by The B.O.B to see "Le Cercle Du Temps", a rotating interactive piece that offers participants the chance to see their head reflected on another viewer's body. Take a short walk over to The Amway Grand Plaza to view “Myth or Logic” a three dimensional mythical creature created by thousands of pieces of bamboo suspended in air on thread. As you make your way up the Grand River you'll encounter dozens of other works of art before stopping in at DeVos Place where artist Marco Riolo will create a monster that your imagination brings to life.

Whether you like traditional art or abstract art, paintings or sculptures, art that conforms or art that pushes the limits, with ArtPrize you are guaranteed to find something you love and almost as certain you'll find pieces that make you question “THIS is art!?” This year's competition gives you the chance to experience over 1500 different works of art in at 169 different venues. But one of the best things about ArtPrize is that you get to help decide who will take home the $200,000 top prize with your votes.

While you take some time to relax after experiencing ArtPrize and cast your votes for who you'd like to have win, you can be guaranteed top prize in accommodations by staying at Prairieside Suites. Each of our suites is so beautifully designed and artfully decorated, that when you climb into bed after a long day at ArtPrize, you'll feel as if you're virtually enjoying a masterfully created room that's work of art. No matter what your taste in art, Prairieside Suites is assured to have a room that fits your artistic style from modern and edgy to old world classics. In order to make your ArtPrize experience into a romantic get away, make your reservation online at Prairieside Suites Luxury Bed & Breakfast today. What could be better after a long day of walking the streets of Grand Rapids than to slip into one of our incredibly large Jacuzzi tubs for two?

In Love and In Business After 30+ Years!

What do a fully renovated 1920s Dutch colonial home, a certified kitchen and bath designer, and a licensed builder have in common? Put them together and they add up to the luxurious Prairieside Suites, an award winning west Michigan bed and breakfast, where owners Cheri and Paul Antozak help guests experience a life of luxury by creating a unique B&B experience.

Cheri, the designer, and Paul, the builder, worked together to make Cheri's dream of owning a "Romantic Bed & Breakfast" a reality opening their doors in April 2002; seven years after the Antozak's purchased this home. The entire home, was renovated to create luxury “spa rooms” out of six individual apartments. The traditional design and luxurious décor exude an atmosphere of warmth and indulgence, inviting guests to relax and forget the stresses of the outside world. As soon as you step through the front door, you are welcomed by smiling faces and hometown hospitality. Cheri says, “guests arrive as strangers and leave feeling like family”.

Luxury guest rooms are at the heart of this nurturing environment. Together, they meticulously created each room as a “one-of-a-kind” LUXURY suite. Each have a theme and decorative style from one our favorite parts of the world, and we love sharing these magnificent rooms with our guests!

Cheri's attention to detail shows in this multi award-winning B&B. These whirlpool & fireplace suites have been published in brochures and national design magazines. She invites you to “step out of your own life briefly and experience something different." Guests tell us that they leave feeling refreshed & rejuvenated. They’re energized and ready to go home and live their best life.

During the summer months, take a dip in the heated pool with waterfall; enjoy the colorful perennial gardens with fountain from the double glider swing in the pergola, or bird watch from a hammock under the shady canopy of the inn's three-hundred-year-old oak tree. In the winter, make popcorn and unwind in the comfort of your room while enjoying a movie from the inn's movie library, featuring over three hundred titles.

"We feel privileged to be able to provide the perfect setting for our guests to celebrate any special occasion," says Cheri. We understand our guest have many choices of places they can STAY, when they’re here with us our goal is to deliver an EXPERIENCE and really build a lasting memory while visiting the Grand Rapids area!

Consumer Trends “Room Lifts” over “Major Home Remodels”

I have been a designer & remodeling contractor since 1986.  I love creating intelligent designs that function beautifully.  I am the designer and Innkeeper at “Prairieside Suites” a romantic bed and breakfast near Grand Rapids, MI featuring luxury whirlpool and fireplace suites.

I have lived through quite a few recessions, seen my share of market shifts and experienced dramatic changes in consumer spending.  I like this phase which I’ll call “conscious consumerism” or a return to good old fashioned values.

  1. People are saving money instead of spending it.
  2. When they do spend money, they’re using cash instead of credit.
  3. People are paying down their credit cards and trying to reduce their debt.
  4. They are making an effort to live within their means.  Wow, wouldn’t Grandpa be proud of us, we’re finally getting it!

This change has had a dramatic impact on home remodeling.  Many homeowners are choosing to do “Room Lifts” which are small personalized room upgrades to their homes instead of the major remodels that were routinely done before the recession.   I see a more conscious effort to re-use, re-cycle and re-claim.  Green is in and it starts with re-purposing.  Home remodeling today is more focused on improving our quality of life while we stay in our homes….essentially creating “live-in value”.  We are creating rooms that we can enjoy, guilt free, because we own the investment.  Gosh, that makes perfect sense to me.

Distinctive B&B ambiance appeals to growing number of travelers
Wednesday, July 06, 2011

The terms “bed & breakfast” (B&B) and “inn” conjure up romantic images of stately Victorian houses nestled among majestic oaks, graciously operated by entrepreneurs we secretly admire because they finally decided to follow their dream. Yet how do these seductive images translate into market appeal? Results of the just-released Ypartnership/Harrison Group 2011 Portrait of American Travelers reveal the answer.

Fully one out of every eight (13 percent) American leisure travelers stayed at a B&B or inn at least once during the previous year, the survey reveals. This incidence rises to one out of six (17 percent) among leisure travelers with an annual household income of $125,000 or more. And a remarkable eight out of ten (79 percent) leisure travelers express interest in staying at a B&B during the year ahead. Why is this notion so appealing? Not surprisingly, it’s the lure of their distinctive ambiance.

When asked why they patronize B&Bs and inns, leisure travelers who did so during the previous year cited reasons that point to the unique, authentic experiences they enjoy during their stay. Nearly two-thirds (64 percent) of patrons prefer the private, less crowded, quiet atmosphere of small inns and B&Bs. More than half feel B&Bs offer a better sense of local culture (56 percent). Personalized service delivered by the innkeeper (54 percent), unique architecture and decor (53 percent) and home-cooked food (52 percent) are also cited as appealing aspects of B&B travel. When compared to a traditional hotel/motel, more than two in five travelers find B&Bs more romantic (47 percent) and feel more pampered (45 percent), while slightly less enjoy socializing with other guests (39 percent) and feel B&Bs are a more affordable escape (37 percent). One in five (19 percent) appreciates a general pet-friendly policy maintained by most B&Bs and small inns.

Among leisure travelers who express interest in staying at a B&B or inn on a future trip, the home-like ambiance and amenities they expect to find in these properties are the primary motivators. The majority of survey respondents cited comfortable beds/linens (92 percent), friendly staff (91 percent), complimentary, fresh-made breakfast (88 percent), free time to relax and unwind (87 percent) and knowledgeable innkeepers (80 percent) as desirable attributes of B&Bs. Other aspects include the opportunity to taste different or unusual cuisines (68 percent), free Wi-Fi availability (67 percent), romantic ambiance (63 percent), distinctive theme or atmosphere (59 percent), unique architecture (55 percent) and the ability to reserve a specific room with unique decor (53 percent). Two in five travelers are eager to socialize with other interesting guests (41 percent).

Clearly, consumers believe B&Bs and inns offer an alluring residential ambiance that is not found in most conventional hotels and resorts. When combined with the personal touches of the host innkeeper, this appeal is very alluring.

Antiquing in Grand Rapids is Pure Michigan

There is something fun about Antiquing and staying at a romantic bed and breakfast, they go together.  Perhaps it’s the thrill of the unknown?  I think it's part of our “Pure Michigan” experience because both are an adventure.  Once I went looking for a creamer and came home with a cool vintage coat with a fur collar.

At “Prairieside Suites Luxury Bed and Breakfast” a Grand Rapids lodging, we have lots of guests who enjoy antiquing in Grandville and Grand Rapids.  They love BOTH our whirlpool & fireplace suites and sharing their antique “FINDS” around the breakfast table in the morning.  The conversation may start out with how they loved their luxury B&B suite, how well they slept in our king size bed, how wonderful our deep two person jacuzzi tubs are and then they talk about where they went the day before, what they did and how they enjoyed our city of Grandville and greater Grand Rapids area, rich with so many activities.

I know some folks know exactly what they’re hunting for when antiquing.  But for many it’s about finding an unexpected treasure and coming home with something you never knew you wanted but are NOW tickled to own.  It’s about memories, pretty things and sometimes you're inspired to go home and dig out things you already own.  Somehow when you blow the dust off and look closely, that little gem talks to you and nurtures your soul!  Crazy I know, but many antique-rs have been mystified… and many husbands have muttered those famous words, “Where are you gonna put that”?

I can’t help but reminisce while I am Antiquing.  You know…these are the glasses we drank out of when we were kids.  Grandma had these and we sold them at a garage sale for a quarter and now they’re here for $10 a piece [don't tell mom]!  We’ve all been there, you know what I mean.

Those of you who have seen my china cabinet know that I have been collecting cut crystal for years.  Paul’s mother started me with a collection of Amber stone dishes that I have added to over the years.  My adopted mom, Julie, has a collection of Candlewick and Orchid Glass.  So I have had some fun hunting for "STUFF" that "WE" collect and while I’m shopping I can’t help but look at the vintage jewelry.  I especially like unique old rings.  Many of them are “one of a kind handmade gems” and I have a few that I wear often!

Here is a list my favorite haunts…come relax, unwind and take a stroll through our many antique stores.  I have clustered them by the area of town they're in.

Prairieside Suites wins 2011 Governor’s Award

2011 Governor’s Award for Innovative Tourism Collaboration is given to Prairieside Suites Luxury Bed & Breakfast for its collaboration on the new “Michigan Lake to Lake B&B Association’s" cutting edge website and for its successful use of blogging, facebook, e-marketing efforts and also for the huge amount of publicity and goodwill that was generated for its participation in the B&B’s for Veterans National Event all of which Prairieside Suites, a Michigan bed and breakfast, participated in.  Governor Rick Snyder presented the award himself at the Spring Governor’s luncheon in Kalamazoo.

Prairieside Suites, owner, Cheri Antozak said “It's a real honor to have received this award given by the Michigan Travel Commission and we’re very proud to have been a part of this collaborative effort”.  We are one of nine B&B’s that received this award from the Tourism Marketing and Promotion Category.

Michigan Lake to Lake B&B Association has more than 130 bed and breakfasts members. With everyone “fighting to be at the top of Google,” we have a greater opportunity collectively to accomplish this than going it alone. The ML2L Association is like a portal, which provides access to resources and promotes it's members.  ML2L has another strength, each member of it's board of directors owns and operates a B&B.  It's these creative minds that help drive the organization.  “There are terrific people in leadership positions on our board of directors,” said, Linda Singer, ML2L's executive director. “An association is all about the people who lead you and we have visionaries.”  To read more about the new ML2L website see related article in MiBiz.com.

Cheri [a designer] & her husband Paul [a builder] purchased their home in 1995.  They worked for seven years transforming their large 1920’s Dutch Colonial home [which was divided into four apartments] into the beautiful modern luxury B&B that it is today.  They accepted their first guests in May 2002.  Cheri says, we know our guests can say anywhere.  They stay with us because we create an experience.  We're different, "B and B's are definitely a better way to stay".

Top 5 myths about staying at a bed and breakfast

Travelers were asked by the California Association of Bed & Breakfast Inns if they had ever stayed at a bed and breakfast, some of their answers led to the discovery of interesting myths surrounding B&Bs.

1. B&B decor is limited to lace doilies, paisley or floral wallpaper, antiques, & patchwork quilts. While many B&B are like visiting a bygone era…At Prairieside Suites Luxury Bed and Breakfast [Grandville, MI] our rooms have been professionally decorated in a timeless manor.  Each room is decorated after a different part of the world says Cheri Antozak owner, innkeeper and designer of Prairieside Suites.  Our spacious themed rooms create an experience in themselves.  We have a Tuscan Villa, a Southern Mansion, a Spanish Hacienda, a French Riviera and an English Cottage suite.  See these romantic get away Havens @ www.prairieside.com.   Each one of these beautiful allergy free spa rooms has a clean sophisticated decor with modern furnishings, flat screen TV’s with more than 100 channels of cable TV and luxury amenities.

2. You have to share a bathroom with other guests?  The majority of inns offer private bathrooms and at Prairieside Suites each guest room has it’s own private luxury bathroom with Jacuzzi tub, showers, heated towel bars & heated toilet seats.

You have to eat breakfast with total strangers?  Many inns offers guests a variety of choices for breakfast and pride themselves on accommodating guests with special diets or food allergies and we do too.  At Prairieside Suites, we offer breakfast three different ways so our guests choose the experience they want.

For everyone’s comfort these rooms are located side by side on the South end of the house without any other guest rooms nearby so our other guests still have their privacy too!  $49.00 one time charge
