Grand Rapids is rich with holiday festivities! For our thespian guests, Master Arts Theatre is presenting A Christmas Carol and the Grand Rapids Civic Theater is presenting Peter Pan. There are a couple of tribute exhibits at our museums that may interest you: Diana- A celebration and Betty Ford- An Extraordinary Life. To go along with the Diana exhibit, you can see (and even taste!) a replica of Diana’s Royal Wedding Cake at the Amyway Grand Plaza Hotel. And, finally- Bodies Revealed is at the Grand Rapids Public Museum. This display of bodies and their organs and how it all works together is sure to intrigue!

Prairieside was honored to be a part of the Inns for Vets program this year! It was a delight to read the stories sent in and we had participation from two local businesses. Season’s Floral adorned each guest suite with a beautiful red, white, and blue bouquet [pictured] and Gordon Food Service donated all the food for our welcome reception.
Our Veterans who have previously stayed at B&B’s remarked on how they enjoyed our luxurious intimate guest suites at Prairieside Suites and said they have never stayed at a B&B with so many in room amenities and thoughtful little touches for them to enjoy. I have always said that owning a bed and breakfast is a love business so I had to smile when Carol, wife of Vietnam vet Floyd said she could “feel the love” at Prairieside Suites. Another Carol (three of our ten guests were named Carol!), wife of retired Army veteran Doug, who was awarded two purple hearts, a bronze star, and a silver star, said she would most definitely recommend Prairieside Suites to her friends and said that Prairieside Suites was the nicest Bed and Breakfast they’d ever stayed in.
After our guests arrived and were settled into their rooms on Wednesday night, we began their visit with a welcome reception. Savory meatballs, spinach dip and pita chips, meat and cheese platter with crackers, cookies, gourmet chocolates, cheesecake sampler, and brownies, along with conversation and story telling were enjoyed by all. It was a pleasant, relaxing evening!
Thursday morning, guests were greeted in the common area with smiles and the smell of French toast being prepared. After everyone gathered, we moved to the dining room where the table was beautifully set, fruit and warm baked goods were waiting. Conversations flowed and we heard laughter many times throughout the meal! One of our veterans also wrote a touching poem which he shared with us as we wrapped up the meal.
After breakfast, the guests started to pack up and, one by one, began to depart. Hugs and thank- yous were given. Jimmy, a disabled veteran who uses a walker to get around, exclaimed as he was leaving: “I feel so good, like I’ve been cured.”
Every vet and every friend or spouse who joined us was grateful and stated that the appreciation shown to them on Veterans Day made an extra special memory, an experience… not just a stay! The veterans are the ones who truly sacrificed, dedicating their lives to protecting us and preserving our freedom. For that, we are grateful beyond words. Honoring these men and women was the very least we could do to say thank you to all of those who have served and are currently serving in our armed forces.
