February is the Month for Romance in Grand Rapids

If you're looking for a way to celebrate Valentine's Day with someone you love, look no further than Grand Rapids. Throughout the month of February, Prairieside Suites Luxury Bed and Breakfast is offering the Lovers' Dream Special. Stay two nights in the same suite & get one FREE half hour massage, a box of gift wrapped chocolates & a firelight romance candle package [a $105.00 value]. You can take advantage of the special any time between now and February 28 by booking online.

So now that you know where to stay while you celebrate Valentine's Day for the ultimate in romance, what other romantic things are there available to do in Grand Rapids?

If you're the active type, there's always skating hand-in-hand at Rosa Parks Circle. And afterwards maybe a short walk to any of a number of local coffee houses to warm up with a hot drink and a sweet treat. You may not think that the middle of winter is the best time for a trip to the beach but the extremely cold weather and massive amounts of snow in West Michigan have made the lake shore unbelievably beautiful to look at. Or maybe you'd like to spend a little time outside, but being a little less active. You can always enjoy a winter carriage ride through the streets of downtown. (Grand Carriages, Classic Carriages, Romance Horse Carriages) Besides with a stay at Prairieside Suites you always warm up in a two-person Jacuzzi tub to take the chill away when you're done.

Maybe you're looking for some hands-on activities to do together as a couple. With Thought Design, you could take a couples cooking class. In February, they're offering a "Me and You" couples class where you can learn about food pairings. Their "Thai One On" class will teach you how to cook Thai food. At The Local Epicurean, couples can take a truffle making class where you will be able to take home a dozen chocolate truffles you make and enjoy a cheese and chocolate platter & drinks during the class. (There is even a Groupon available for this event).  Maybe food isn't your thing and you're more the artistic type. At Brush Studio you and your date can learn how to paint. Enjoy a glass of wine, order some food in, and let their instructors teach you how to create a masterpiece.

Are you looking for an entertaining show? The Delta Plex is hosting the Brew Ha Ha over Valentine's Day weekends. This events combines what Grand Rapids is famous for, craft beers, and comedy. Join the Grand Rapids Symphony as they celebrate classic rock 'n roll with music from the Rolling Stones on February 15.  At the end of the month, the Grand Rapids Civic theater will begin its run of Les Miserables.

What romantic date would be complete without the perfect meal?  Cygnus 27 may be the tops when it comes to fine dining in Grand Rapids. Located at the top of the Amway Grand Plaza this beautiful restaurant not only offers amazing views from high above the city, but also delicious food. San Chez is another local favorites. This Spanish Tapas Bistro offers patrons the chance to share small plate dishes. Both of these restaurants are perfect any time of year for a romantic dinner.

If you're looking for restaurants offering special Valentine's Day deals, Grand Rapids has several to offer. Zeytin is a top rated restaurant offering Turkish cuisine. This Valentine's Day they're offering a special pairing dinner that includes an appetizer of your choice with any two kebabs, seafood, or vegetable entrée along with a bottle of selected red or white wine.  Shiraz is another restaurants with international flair that has a Valentine's weekend dining special.  Specializing in Persian and Mediterranean cuisine this restaurant will feature a romantic four course dinner for two including wine for only $79. .If you're looking for more traditional dining, head to Boulder Creek. For $45, couples can choose an appetizer, to salads, two entrées, and a dessert to share.

No matter how you choose to celebrate Valentine's Day or when you choose to celebrate it, a romantic jacuzzi suite at Prairieside is the perfect way to end your date. Be sure to book your stay before February 28 in order to take advantage of our Lovers' Dream Special.

New Years Celebrations in Grand Rapids

It's that time of year again, 2014 is right around the corner.  If you're looking for something exciting this New Years Eve, Grand Rapids has a variety of ways to ring in the new year right.

Starting with the week before New Years Eve (Dec 26 – Dec 29), Broadway Grand Rapids presents Cirque Dreams Holidaze at DeVos Performance Hall.  In this production, a cast of 30 international artists will perform amazing feats on stage.  The audience will experience gingerbread men flipping, toy soldiers marching on thin wires, penguins spinning, and more all to an original score and hundreds of spectacular costumes.

If amazing acrobats aren't your thing, maybe a quiet evening at the museum . . . or maybe your evening won't be so quiet when you walk into Night at Your Museum.  Based on the popular 2006 and 2009 movies starring Ben Stiller, this family friendly event at the Grand Rapids Public Museum (Dec 27) will deliver sword fighting Medieval Knights, Native Americans in full regalia performing ceremonial dances, and Civil War soldiers reenacting skirmishes.

Then on December 31st the New Years Celebrations really kick off downtown.  You can choose from a variety of different events that suit your tastes.  Maybe you like your celebrations a little old school.  Why not enjoy the Grand Rapids Symphony's performance of A Swingin' New Years Eve? You can enjoy the music stylings of the greats like Glen Miller & Cole Porter.  Keeping with the theme of taking you back to a different era, the JW Marriott will host the R18 New Years Eve Party.  R18 is in reference to repealing the 18th amendment and this prohibition themed party will offer a speak easy feel with authentic music.   Or maybe you'd like to try out something a little more young and fresh, join the Grand Rapids Young Professionals as they put on their GRYP New Years Eve Party.  The DeVos Place Ballroom will be transformed into  a club complete with arcade games, pool tables, a dance floor, DJs and a VIP lounge.  Make a paparazzi style red carpet entrance in your best cocktail attire for this event.

Maybe you'd like something a little more quiet, like dinner for twoFire Creek Grill, Watermark Grille & Rush Creek Bistro will all be offering a special New Years Eve dinner featuring a four course meal, live music, and a champagne toast for $45 per person.  Louise Benton is doing New Years up right with a fine dining formal dinner party that lasts all night.  For $250 per couple you can start your evening with hors d'oerves from 5:30 until 7:30, move on to a three course dinner, fabulous desserts throughout the evening, four drink tickets, a champagne toast, live music with Steve Hilger Band from 9:30-12am and then dance until 3 AM with DJ Ira BriggsReserve, located downtown, also plans a special dinner experience for New Years Eve.  The evening will feature a special menu and again a champagne toast to top off the evening.

It's possible you're not the party type, maybe a big celebration isn't your thing.  You could start the new year with a few laughs. Join Grand Rapids native comedian Michael Jr. for his Stand Up & Give New Years Comedy Event . This is a family friendly Christian comedy show at Grand Rapids First.  Or maybe you're a sports enthusiast and heading down the VanAndel Arena as the Grand Rapids Griffins take to the ice in a match up against the Toronto Marlies.

What New Years Eve Celebration would be complete without a ball drop?  There's no need to go all the way to Times Square in New York.  Grand Rapids has it's very own ball drop at Rosa Parks Circle downtown, complete with a free concert brought to you by 105.3 Hot FM featuring IYAZ and Nick Hissom.  The party kicks off at 6:30.

Is your idea of ringing in the New Year more on the quiet romantic side?  Would it include staying in a beautiful room with a fireplace and a big jacuzzi tub for two?  Lets add in heated towels, heated tile floors and a beverage center in your room which includes a refrig for something sparkling and bubbly plus an electric wine chiller with corkscrew, stemware, microwave & dishware.  You can pack light and enjoy all the comforts of home.  That's right, make a lasting memory with a Romantic Get Away for two at Prairieside Suites Luxury Bed & Breakfast where you'll find ALL THIS and MORE located only 6 minutes from downtown Grand Rapids.  See our gorgeous rooms, which are themed after a different part of the world with real time availability and 24 hour booking online.  Are you looking for the perfect gift for your someone special for Christmas?  Gift certificates are available online and they can be printed immediately.  Make this a Holiday to remember. . . experience something new by staying at Prairieside Suites Luxury B&B.

Make Ahead Mashed Potato Casserole

When it comes to the holidays and cooking, it's best to make things as easy as possible.  This recipe for Make Ahead Mashed Potato Casserole is perfect for that.  Maybe you need to drive on The Holiday to visit family?  Make this dish a day ahead and bake at your final destination.  Or put it in your crock pot insert to bake in your own oven, then put it into your crock pot to travel and keep warm until dinner is served.  If you are making lots of dishes to serve then take some stress off by making this up the day before so it's just one less thing to worry about on party Day.  Either way you're sure to enjoy a different spin on your typical Mashed Potatoes and Gravy.

Make Ahead Mashed Potato Casserole

4lb’s russet potatoes peeled & cut into 1” chunks [about 8 medium]

½ Cup half and half

½ Cup low sodium chicken broth

1 ½ sticks unsalted butter, cut into pieces

1 clove Minced Garlic

2 tsp. Dijon Mustard

2 tsp. Salt

4 Large Eggs

¼ Cup finely chopped fresh chives

Heat oven to 375. Bring potatoes to a boil over high heat, simmer till tender.

Heat all ingredients except eggs over low heat till smooth. Keep warm.

Drain potatoes into a large mixing bowl, mix on medium/low speed, slowly adding liquid mixture for 1 minute.

Now Beat eggs into potatoes, one at a time, and fold in the chives [they will be soupy, they firm when baked].

Transfer into a greased 9”x13” pan, a 2 quart casserole or a crock pot insert with a plastic liner [use non-stick spray]. Use a fork to make peaked design in potatoes. Bake uncovered for 35 minutes [or 45 minutes if you refrigerated overnight]. The eggs make them puff up beautifully. Let cool 10 minutes.

Note: This casserole can be made a day before you want to serve. Cover with plastic wrap & refrigerate. Remove from refrigerator 1 hour before baking to bring to room temperature and add 10 minutes to your baking time.
