Thai Food Popular All Around Grand Rapids

Thai food represents the tastes and traditions of Thailand. Known for being very aromatic and spicy, the flavors of Thai food are complex. The food is all about the harmony of four flavors: sweet, salty, bitter and spicy. Popular ingredients include shrimp paste (kapi), fermented fish sauce (nam pia), fresh coriander leaf, lemon grass, lime juice, chilies, and garlic. Coconut milk, ginger and ground peanuts are also familiar ingredients found in Thai food. Often served with rice, Thai food is also heavy in vegetables and can be made to appeal to vegetarians.

Thai food was introduced worldwide in the 1960's, but it's only been in the last several years that it's become quite popular throughout the US. When asked to name an ethnic cuisine, Thai food ranks fourth amongst Americans behind Italian, French and Chinese. Now most larger size cities in the US have Thai restaurants. Grand Rapids is no exception with nearly a dozen different Thai restaurants all around town (see list below).

If you're unfamiliar with Thai food, but wanting to give it a try, it can be a little confusing to know what to order. This list of 10 Most Popular Thai Foods will give you a good place to start. If you're one of those people who hears the word "spicy" and tend to think "Spicy isn't really my thing!", you'll be happy to know that most Thai restaurants let you order to your liking on a spiciness scale of 1 to 10. The list below can serve as a glossary to terms you'll see on most Thai menus.

Basic Thai Food Terms

Pad Thai- The famous noodle dish, made with flat rice noodles, and added seasoning, as well as usually shrimp.

Thai Green Curry-  Can be made with chicken, beef or seafood, this is a popular curry, where the sauce is made from a fresh cilantro and coconut base.

Tom Yam Goong- (also called Tom Yam Kung) The soup that’s hot, sour, sweet and spicy, tom yam goong is a clear soup that usually has shrimp in it too.

Tom Kha Gai-  Coconut-based chicken soup.

Satay- The Thai version of a kebob.  Usual choices are chicken and beef, satay is typically mild and comes with a peanut dipping sauce.

Mango Sticky Rice- The most popular dessert for all ages.  Exactly what it says it is.

Masaman Curry- The Thai version of beef and potato stew.

Yum Nua- Spicy beef salad.

So now that you know where to stay while you celebrate Valentine's Day for the ultimate in romance, what other romantic things are there available to do in Grand Rapids?

If you're the active type, there's always skating hand-in-hand at Rosa Parks Circle. And afterwards maybe a short walk to any of a number of local coffee houses to warm up with a hot drink and a sweet treat. You may not think that the middle of winter is the best time for a trip to the beach but the extremely cold weather and massive amounts of snow in West Michigan have made the lake shore unbelievably beautiful to look at. Or maybe you'd like to spend a little time outside, but being a little less active. You can always enjoy a winter carriage ride through the streets of downtown. (Grand Carriages, Classic Carriages, Romance Horse Carriages) Besides with a stay at Prairieside Suites you always warm up in a two-person Jacuzzi tub to take the chill away when you're done.

Maybe you're looking for some hands-on activities to do together as a couple. With Thought Design, you could take a couples cooking class. In February, they're offering a "Me and You" couples class where you can learn about food pairings. Their "Thai One On" class will teach you how to cook Thai food. At The Local Epicurean, couples can take a truffle making class where you will be able to take home a dozen chocolate truffles you make and enjoy a cheese and chocolate platter & drinks during the class. (There is even a Groupon available for this event).  Maybe food isn't your thing and you're more the artistic type. At Brush Studio you and your date can learn how to paint. Enjoy a glass of wine, order some food in, and let their instructors teach you how to create a masterpiece.

Are you looking for an entertaining show? The Delta Plex is hosting the Brew Ha Ha over Valentine's Day weekends. This events combines what Grand Rapids is famous for, craft beers, and comedy. Join the Grand Rapids Symphony as they celebrate classic rock 'n roll with music from the Rolling Stones on February 15.  At the end of the month, the Grand Rapids Civic theater will begin its run of Les Miserables.

What romantic date would be complete without the perfect meal?  Cygnus 27 may be the tops when it comes to fine dining in Grand Rapids. Located at the top of the Amway Grand Plaza this beautiful restaurant not only offers amazing views from high above the city, but also delicious food. San Chez is another local favorites. This Spanish Tapas Bistro offers patrons the chance to share small plate dishes. Both of these restaurants are perfect any time of year for a romantic dinner.

If you're looking for restaurants offering special Valentine's Day deals, Grand Rapids has several to offer. Zeytin is a top rated restaurant offering Turkish cuisine. This Valentine's Day they're offering a special pairing dinner that includes an appetizer of your choice with any two kebabs, seafood, or vegetable entrée along with a bottle of selected red or white wine.  Shiraz is another restaurants with international flair that has a Valentine's weekend dining special.  Specializing in Persian and Mediterranean cuisine this restaurant will feature a romantic four course dinner for two including wine for only $79. .If you're looking for more traditional dining, head to Boulder Creek. For $45, couples can choose an appetizer, to salads, two entrées, and a dessert to share.

No matter how you choose to celebrate Valentine's Day or when you choose to celebrate it, a romantic jacuzzi suite at Prairieside is the perfect way to end your date. Be sure to book your stay before February 28 in order to take advantage of our Lovers' Dream Special.

This is a family friendly Christian comedy show at Grand Rapids First.  Or maybe you're a sports enthusiast and heading down the VanAndel Arena as the Grand Rapids Griffins take to the ice in a match up against the Toronto Marlies.

What New Years Eve Celebration would be complete without a ball drop?  There's no need to go all the way to Times Square in New York.  Grand Rapids has it's very own ball drop at Rosa Parks Circle downtown, complete with a free concert brought to you by 105.3 Hot FM featuring IYAZ and Nick Hissom.  The party kicks off at 6:30.

Grand Haven Light House

A Perfect Spring through Fall Get Away…Imagine waking up in a king size bed at, the award winning, Prairieside Suites. A Luxury Michigan Bed and Breakfast.  You roll over, cuddle and talk about how much you both enjoyed the romantic oversized jacuzzi bath before bed last night.  You feel amazingly relaxed while you enjoy a wonderful candle light breakfast fit for royalty.

Now off for a day of lake shore fun in Grand Haven.  Enjoy the magnificent beauty alongside Lake Michigan’s sandy beaches after a lovely 40 minute drive.  Arrive at Grand Haven State Park and take a leisurely walk, on the pier, out to the story and a half “Pierhead light house” which was built in 1875 and moved after a pier extension in 1905.

The building has a concrete V-shaped front to withstand the fury of Lake Michigan storms which makes the light house look like a ship’s bow.  In 1905 a second 51-foot tower was constructed and is referred to as the “inner light”.  Both fire-engine red beacons, located at the end of South Harbor Drive, mark the entrance to the Grand River at Grand Haven, MI.  It is common to see fishermen as your stroll down the concrete pier. These buildings [which are active navigation aids] have an elevated catwalk that connects the two lights.  When the lights were manned by keepers, in bad weather, the catwalk was used to get from the shore.  The lights, which are maintained by the Grand Haven Coast Guard, are not open to the public and the catwalk for public safety now stops short of running all the way to the beach.

Next you can relax and unwind while you experience some adventure while sailing the beautiful waters of Lake Michigan on a 63-foot double gaff-rigged schooner, the Wind Dancer, which departs daily from the Chinook pier.  Let the crew tend to your needs while you and your sweetheart unwind with a glass of wine as you feel the warm summer breezes blowing through your hair.  [Make sure to wear light colored soft soled shoes as any Black soled shoes, even athletic shoes can damage the classic decks].

After your romantic sailing excursion your senses will be refreshed and you’ll be ready to seek both land and food.  The Kirby House, which was formerly a historic hotel, is a community favorite [located at 2 Washington Ave., Grand Haven, MI 49417].  Featuring both excellent food and live entertainment it’s sure to please.

Come, experience my world!
