West Michigan Events: A Winter Wonderland!

  • Grand_Rapids_Winter

West Michigan is a winter wonderland! One of the best things about Grand Rapids is that we truly get to see every season in all it's glory. This year we're seeing plenty of what winter has to offer, with record snowfalls and low temperatures, but that doesn't mean this isn't still the perfect time to visit the area or to get out an enjoy the winter weather if you already live here.

Take time to create some special moments this winter by enjoying the beauty and unique opportunities that West Michigan has to offer. You'll be amazed as you watch what artists create at the Holland Ice Sculpting Contest January 10th and 11th or the Rockford Ice Festival on February 7th and 8th.

Of course the American Hockey League [AHL] Calder Cup Champions, the Grand Rapids Griffins will take to the ice indoors at the Van Andel arena all winter long. You can always stay indoors and enjoy watching them in warmth of VanAndel Arena, but why not head outside and hit the ice with the players. During the Great Skate Winterfest on January 18th and 19th you can skate along side Griffins' hockey players as they take to the ice at Rosa Parks Circle for 34 consecutive hours. During this event you'll also get the chance to enjoy sled dogs, ice sculpting, winter sports demonstrations, zoo animals, carriage rides, a family activity tent and more.

Friends of Grand Rapids Parks will be putting on a Winter West event January 24 – February 9 where you can enjoy 3 on 3 hockey, a Fat Bike race, and a Crazy Cardboard Sled Competition. There will also be sledding, ice skating, and a warming tent to enjoy all while seeing what one of Grand Rapids big parks has to offer.
If you're looking for an event that will warm your body and quite possibly your soul, check out the Winter Jam Tour Spectacular on January 23rd at Van Andel Arena. For only $10 at the door you can enjoy 11 of the top names in Christian music putting on this inspirational concert.

Aside from all the great winter events that are planned over the next couple of months, here's some winter fun that you can have any time your heart desires. Ice skating at Rosa Park Circle is available all throughout the winter with skate rentals. You can check out Cannonsburg Ski Area if you'd like to get in a little downhill action. Pando Park not only offers another downhill ski/snowboarding option, but they also have x-country skiing and tubing. L.E. Kauffman Cross Country course is just a 5 mile drive from Prairieside Suites and offers not only miles of beautifully groomed x-country trails, but also inexpensive x-country ski rentals. A drive up to Muskegon for the day will give you the opportunity to check out the Muskegon Winter Sports Complex where they offer the typical winter fun fare like x-country skiing, sledding, and skating, but they also have tobogganing and a luge run. Maybe grab a sled and feel like a kid again. This Winter Activity Guide will let you know where all the great local sledding hills are along with a variety of locations for other winter fun activities.
