They say that laughter is the best medicine! So maybe that's why in March 2011 the Gilda's Club of Grand Rapids (a free cancer and grief support community of adults, children and families) started Laughfest, the nation’s first-ever community-wide festival of laughter. In fact the whole point is "to celebrate laughter for the health of it". The ten day festival, that takes place in Grand Rapids with events all throughout West Michigan in a variety of venues, features stand-up, improv, film, authors, community showcases, and variety of seriously funny stuff. This laugh filled events has a variety of things to see and do for anyone from age 5 to 105. The purpose of the event is "to honor laughter as an essential part of emotional health and well-being." It's also a way to raise awareness and funds to help support Gilda's Club Grand Rapids in their efforts to encourage children, adults, friends, and families facing cancer.
Previous Laughfest headliners have included stars like Betty White and the hilariously funny Wayne Brady. Headliners for the 2014 shows include: Lily Tomlin, Jim Gaffigan, Chris Tucker, Maria Bamford, and fresh off his duties hosting the Tonight Show, Jay Leno. Local improv groups Pop Scholars and River City Improv will also be performing. Comedy shows will range from family friendly to clean adult humor to more on the racy side. No matter what your sense of humor you're sure to find something to fit your tastes.
But Laughfests isn't about just sitting around and watching people who will make you laugh. The organizers of Laughfests have also turned it into a physical experience with activities like Laughter Yoga, a Ping-Pong drop-in play, a FUNderwear 5K where participants run in their finest underwear, and The Seriously Funny Family Adventure Challenge (an Amazing Race type adventure).
There are even a variety of kid focused events on tap. Super Saturday Kids Zone on March 8 is a kids theme carnivals with inflatable games, mini-golf, laser tag, and special guests. At Civic Theater a group of performers will act out the children's book "No Dogs Allowed". There is even a chance for kids to become standup comedians themselves. Several local libraries will host kid comedy nights, where kids can sign up to deliver their best jokes.
