Why Cheri Loves Her Guests

It's always our pleasure to be a part of so many Birthdays, Anniversaries, Honeymoons, Babymoons and many special moments that our guests celebrate while they stay with us.  Every so often I'm delighted to receive a surprise "Thank you" note after a guest returns home after staying with us. I recently received a reservation from a guest who will be staying here for his fourth year in a row.  They'll be celebrating their 43rd Anniversary with us this June. I wanted to share Frank's thank you note that he sent to me back in 2012 & my response to him.

Re.      A Special Note of our Gratitude

Cheri & Paul,

Kathy and I want to take this opportunity and "Thank You" and your staff for the wonderful stay we experienced at your establishment these past three (3) days (June 11 to June 14, 2012) of this month. Both of you are very warm and friendly people with open personalities that make you very genuine that everyone can come to like and appreciate your skills and talents in the hospitality industry. I truly enjoyed the WIT and BANTER of joking around in conversation with both of you and enjoying laughter without either of you becoming defensive or offended. You have a great thing going and the awards are the testimony of the exceptional service your business is performing in this very tough market place.

We truly appreciated your great hospitality and service besides both of your daily presence during our stay. This may be more than a patron's praise but the beginning of a beautiful friendship. We are actually considering on seeing you again next year. Hopefully this time we will not be with all newly wed couples wondering who the heck is this guy and how long can he be married to her.

May God continue to bless your business, marriage and family besides keeping you healthy to let your hidden gem flourish making guests enjoy lodging happiness.

Your new found friends,

Frank & Kathryn Fon
Chicago

PS. We gave your establishment a favorable rating on Trip Advisor, because we wanted too. Please do not send us any endorsement fee since we did this recommendation because you deserved the accolades. (My wonderful humor again.)

Frank,
First-Thank you for choosing to spend your anniversary with us again next year (I saw your new reservation come in).  We will be looking forward to seeing you…in a blink (you know how time flies).

Second-I love that picture!  I printed one and put it in with your reservation.

Third-You leave me speechless with your lovely note (Paul says he didn't know that could be done! :-o ) I will share it with our hardworking staff as inspiration that guests DO NOTICE that they care and do such a great job.

Forth-May I post your note as a review on www.bedandbreakfast.com & www.bnbfinder.com?  They'll send you an email for confirm that it came from you.

AND Fifth…last but not least THANK YOU THE MOST FOR THE BLESSING BECAUSE LORD KNOWS I CAN USE IT!!!  (my wonderful humor back at ya Frank).

Love from YOUR FRIENDS,
Cheri & Paul

Thai Food Popular All Around Grand Rapids

Thai food represents the tastes and traditions of Thailand. Known for being very aromatic and spicy, the flavors of Thai food are complex. The food is all about the harmony of four flavors: sweet, salty, bitter and spicy. Popular ingredients include shrimp paste (kapi), fermented fish sauce (nam pia), fresh coriander leaf, lemon grass, lime juice, chilies, and garlic. Coconut milk, ginger and ground peanuts are also familiar ingredients found in Thai food. Often served with rice, Thai food is also heavy in vegetables and can be made to appeal to vegetarians.

Thai food was introduced worldwide in the 1960's, but it's only been in the last several years that it's become quite popular throughout the US. When asked to name an ethnic cuisine, Thai food ranks fourth amongst Americans behind Italian, French and Chinese. Now most larger size cities in the US have Thai restaurants. Grand Rapids is no exception with nearly a dozen different Thai restaurants all around town (see list below).

If you're unfamiliar with Thai food, but wanting to give it a try, it can be a little confusing to know what to order. This list of 10 Most Popular Thai Foods will give you a good place to start. If you're one of those people who hears the word "spicy" and tend to think "Spicy isn't really my thing!", you'll be happy to know that most Thai restaurants let you order to your liking on a spiciness scale of 1 to 10. The list below can serve as a glossary to terms you'll see on most Thai menus.

Basic Thai Food Terms

Pad Thai- The famous noodle dish, made with flat rice noodles, and added seasoning, as well as usually shrimp.

Thai Green Curry-  Can be made with chicken, beef or seafood, this is a popular curry, where the sauce is made from a fresh cilantro and coconut base.

Tom Yam Goong- (also called Tom Yam Kung) The soup that’s hot, sour, sweet and spicy, tom yam goong is a clear soup that usually has shrimp in it too.

Tom Kha Gai-  Coconut-based chicken soup.

Satay- The Thai version of a kebob.  Usual choices are chicken and beef, satay is typically mild and comes with a peanut dipping sauce.

Mango Sticky Rice- The most popular dessert for all ages.  Exactly what it says it is.

Masaman Curry- The Thai version of beef and potato stew.

Yum Nua- Spicy beef salad.

Laughfest is a Roaring Good Time in Grand Rapids

They say that laughter is the best medicine! So maybe that's why in March 2011 the Gilda's Club of Grand Rapids (a free cancer and grief support community of adults, children and families) started Laughfest, the nation’s first-ever community-wide festival of laughter. In fact the whole point is "to celebrate laughter for the health of it". The ten day festival, that takes place in Grand Rapids with events all throughout West Michigan in a variety of venues, features stand-up, improv, film, authors, community showcases, and variety of seriously funny stuff. This laugh filled events has a variety of things to see and do for anyone from age 5 to 105. The purpose of the event is "to honor laughter as an essential part of emotional health and well-being." It's also a way to raise awareness and funds to help support Gilda's Club Grand Rapids in their efforts to encourage children, adults, friends, and families facing cancer.

Previous Laughfest headliners have included stars like Betty White and the hilariously funny Wayne Brady. Headliners for the 2014 shows include: Lily Tomlin, Jim Gaffigan, Chris Tucker, Maria Bamford, and fresh off his duties hosting the Tonight Show, Jay Leno. Local improv groups Pop Scholars and River City Improv will also be performing. Comedy shows will range from family friendly to clean adult humor to more on the racy side. No matter what your sense of humor you're sure to find something to fit your tastes.

But Laughfests isn't about just sitting around and watching people who will make you laugh. The organizers of Laughfests have also turned it into a physical experience with activities like Laughter Yoga, a Ping-Pong drop-in play, a FUNderwear 5K where participants run in their finest underwear, and The Seriously Funny Family Adventure Challenge (an Amazing Race type adventure).

There are even a variety of kid focused events on tap. Super Saturday Kids Zone on March 8 is a kids theme carnivals with inflatable games, mini-golf, laser tag, and special guests.  At Civic Theater a group of performers will act out the children's book "No Dogs Allowed". There is even a chance for kids to become standup comedians themselves. Several local libraries will host kid comedy nights, where kids can sign up to deliver their best jokes.

March 6 through 16, 2014 is the perfect time to visit Grand Rapids and be part of this fun and laugh filled festival. Check out the Laughfest calendar and find out what events you want to take part in. The laughter is certain to rejuvenate your mind! And to rejuvenate your body and soul while you're in town be sure to stay at Prairieside Suites. Our luxury suites, all with over-sized two person whirlpool tubs, are sure to be the perfect accommodations for this event. Book your stay today!
